The Scenic & Tranquil Northern Slope Approach (~85% Summit Success)
The 6-Day Rongai Route is the only trail that ascends Mount Kilimanjaro from the peaceful northern side along the Kenyan border. Preferred by hikers seeking a quieter, less crowded mountain experience, Rongai offers low trail traffic, open pine and moorland scenery, and expansive views looking across the Kenyan plains.
Because the northern slopes stay drier than southern routes, Rongai is an excellent choice year-round. This 6-day itinerary features steady, moderate incline gains, passing Second Cave, Kikelewa Camp, and Mawenzi Tarn Hut before taking on the summit push to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) and descending via the lush Marangu rainforest trail on the south side.

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), meet our driver for a private transfer to your hotel in Moshi. Rest after your travel before meeting your head mountain guide for a pre-trek briefing and gear check to ensure all required equipment is ready.
Drive around the mountain base to Nale Moru village near the Kenyan border. Complete registration formalities at the park gate and begin hiking along a wide path through pine forests and farmlands. Reach Simba Camp at the edge of the moorland zone for dinner and your first overnight stay on the mountain.
Trek steadily through open moorland towards Second Cave (3,450m), where you will pause for a hot lunch and rest. Continue across undulating terrain with clear views of Mawenzi Peak and the wide Kenyan plains before arriving at Kikelewa Camp in a sheltered valley.
Ascend short, steep grassy slopes leaving lower vegetation behind. Reach Mawenzi Tarn Camp, situated in a high cirque beneath the imposing spires of Mawenzi Peak. Use the afternoon to rest, take short acclimatization walks around the alpine lake, and prepare for higher elevations.
Cross the lunar alpine desert known as 'The Saddle' bridging Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Arrive at Kibo Hut by early afternoon to rest, enjoy an early hot dinner, prepare headlamps and warm layers, and turn in early for midnight summit preparations.
Begin the summit push around 1:00 AM using headlamps to navigate steep scree slopes toward Gilman’s Point (5,700m) on the crater rim. Continue past frozen glaciers to Uhuru Peak (5,895m)—the highest point in Africa! Celebrate and capture pictures at the summit before descending to Kibo Hut for lunch, then heading down to Horombo Hut for overnight stay.
Descend through moorland into the lush rainforest surrounding Mandara Hut and Marangu Gate. Complete park exit procedures, receive your official summit certificates (Gold for Uhuru Peak, Green for Gilman's Point), say farewell to your crew, and transfer back to your Moshi hotel for a warm shower and celebration.
