High Altitude Start – Expansive Shira Plateau & Scenic Western Approach
The Shira Route is one of Mount Kilimanjaro's original western trails. It approaches the mountain from the west, driving climbers up to high initial altitudes near 3,500–3,600 meters before stepping foot on the trail. It shares a similar path across the mountain as the Lemosho Route, but skips the lower rainforest walking section in favor of a fast start directly onto the vast Shira Plateau.
| Starting Point | Shira Gate / Londorossi Gate (3,500m / 11,500ft) |
|---|---|
| Ending Point | Mweka Gate (1,640m / 5,380ft) |
| Recommended Duration | 6 or 7 Days (7 Days offers better acclimatization along the circuit) |
| Total Trekking Distance | Approximately 56 km (35 miles) |
| Accommodation Type | High-Altitude Tent Camping |
| Difficulty Rating | Challenging (Requires careful monitoring due to high starting altitude) |
The trek begins after a scenic drive from Moshi or Arusha through the western foothills up to Shira Gate. Climbers start hiking directly in the moorland zone and quickly cross the dramatic expanses of the Shira Plateau toward Shira Camp 2.
From the plateau, the route merges with the popular Machame path, taking hikers up toward the imposing Lava Tower (4,630m) for essential altitude adaptation before descending to sleep at Barranco Camp (3,900m).
After scaling the famous Barranco Wall, the trail winds through Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,673m). The summit push takes place at midnight, climbing to Stella Point and reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m) at sunrise before descending along the Mweka Route.
