High-Altitude Expedition across the Scenic Shira Plateau
The 7-Day Shira Route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the west, starting at a higher elevation near the Londorossi Gate. Climbers drive directly up to the high Shira Plateau before beginning their trek across giant heather, volcanic rock formations, and cathedral peaks.
Because the trailhead begins at high elevation, proper pacing and hydration are crucial on Day 1. The route joins the Lemosho and Machame trails near Lava Tower (4,600m), offering built-in "climb high, sleep low" acclimatization before navigating the iconic Barranco Wall toward the Barafu base camp and Uhuru Peak summit.

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and meet your private driver for transfer to your hotel in Moshi. In the afternoon, meet your lead mountain guide for an equipment check and comprehensive pre-trek briefing.
Drive to Londorossi Gate for registration formalities. Continue by vehicle up to the trail head on the high plateau. Begin hiking gradually across moorland shrubs and giant heather toward Shira 1 Camp. Focus on slow pacing and high fluid intake.
Trek across the moorland zone and volcanic rock formations of the Shira Plateau. Take an acclimatization side trip toward Shira Cathedral (3,872m) before continuing on to Shira Hut 2 for dinner and stargazing.
Ascend toward the volcanic rock formation of Lava Tower (4,600m) for hot lunch and high-altitude acclimatization. Descend down into the scenic Barranco Valley to sleep at Barranco Hut (3,900m).
Scramble up the famous Barranco Wall using non-technical hands-on footholds. Traverse a series of ridges and valleys into Karanga Valley for an afternoon rest and acclimatization.
Ascend through alpine desert terrain toward Barafu Hut base camp. Arrive around mid-day for lunch, summit gear preparation, and an early evening sleep prior to the midnight summit push.
Begin the summit attempt around midnight across glacial scree switchbacks toward Stella Point (5,756m). Continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). After photos, descend back to Barafu Camp for a brief rest before heading down to Mweka Hut.
Descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. Receive official summit certificates (Gold for Uhuru Peak, Green for Stella Point) and transfer back to Moshi town for celebratory showers and rest.
