7-Day Lemosho Route Trek

High Acclimatization & Scenic Wilderness Ascent to Uhuru Peak

7 Days Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro Trekking

Route Overview & Experience

The 7-Day Lemosho Route is one of the most highly recommended itineraries for ascending Mount Kilimanjaro. Starting on the quiet western slope at Londorossi Gate, the trail navigates lush rainforests before crossing the vast Shira Plateau, merging with the Southern Circuit past Lava Tower and Barranco Wall.

The 7-day schedule provides an optimal altitude profile with built-in "climb high, sleep low" opportunities. This approach enhances physical acclimatization, boosting summit success rates while delivering scenic vistas across Kibo Peak, Shira Ridge, and alpine desert zones.

Key Highlights of the 7-Day Lemosho Trek

  • High Summit Success Rate: Optimal elevation profile minimizes altitude sickness.
  • Pristine Rainforest Start: Low crowd levels on initial days from Londorossi Gate.
  • Iconic Landmarks: Tackle Lava Tower (4,630m) and the exciting scramble up Barranco Wall.
  • Diverse Ecosystems: Cross rainforest, heath, moorland, alpine desert, and arctic summit zone.

Day-by-Day Detailed Itinerary

Early morning pick-up from your Moshi hotel followed by a 2-hour drive to Londorossi Gate for permit processing and park registration. Continue driving to the trailhead before trekking through dense montane rainforest. Keep an eye out for wildlife, including black-and-white Colobus monkeys, before arriving at Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp.

Distance: 6 km | Hike Time: 3–4 hours | Habitat: Rainforest | Meals: Lunch & Dinner
Acclimatization Tip: Drink over 4 liters of water daily, limit caffeine, and inform your guide immediately if you experience headaches or nausea.

Ascend out of the forest and emerge into giant heather and moorland zones. Climb across the Shira Ridge to enter the Shira Plateau, offering panoramic horizon views of Kibo Peak. Continue across the plateau to settle into Shira 2 Camp for dinner and rest.

Distance: 10 km | Hike Time: 3–4 hours | Habitat: Moorland & High Desert | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Trek east across semi-desert trails toward Lava Tower at 4,630m for an essential acclimatization day ("climb high, sleep low"). After lunch near the tower, descend through giant senecio forests into Barranco Valley beneath the Great Barranco Wall.

Distance: 10 km | Hike Time: 7–9 hours | Habitat: Alpine Desert | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Begin the morning scrambling up the 150m Barranco Wall, using hands and feet on non-technical rock. Enjoy sweeping views from the top before traversing alpine ridges and valleys down into Karanga Camp for hot meals and early evening rest.

Distance: 5 km | Hike Time: 3–5 hours | Habitat: Alpine Desert | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Depart Karanga Camp and join the Mweka trail junction before climbing up to Barafu High Camp. You enter the arctic climate zone, where vegetation vanishes and cold winds pick up. Prepare gear, eat an early dinner, and sleep ahead of the midnight summit push.

Distance: 4 km | Hike Time: 3–5 hours | Habitat: Alpine Desert | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Wake at 11:30 PM for tea and light snacks before starting the summit ascent at 1:00 AM. Ascend steep scree switchbacks past Stella Point (5,756m) to reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m) at sunrise—the highest point in Africa! After photos, descend back to Barafu Camp for rest and lunch, then continue down to Mweka Camp for overnight stay.

Distance: 21 km total | Hike Time: 12–14 hours | Habitat: Arctic Scree & Rainforest | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Complete your descent through lush forest down to Mweka Gate. Collect official Kilimanjaro summit certificates, celebrate with the mountain crew, and enjoy private transport back to your hotel in Moshi for a warm shower.
