The Longest, Quietest & Most Scenic Traverse to Uhuru Peak
The 9-Day Northern Circuit Route is Mount Kilimanjaro’s newest, longest, and most comprehensive trekking itinerary. Initial ascent steps follow the scenic Lemosho track up through the western rainforest onto the Shira Plateau. Instead of turning south along the crowded Southern Circuit, the Northern Circuit branches north to circle the quiet northern slopes around Kibo Peak.
Spanning 9 full days on the mountain, this route offers the absolute best acclimatization profile of any trail on Kilimanjaro. By giving your body extended exposure to mid-to-high altitudes before reaching base camp at School Huts, the Northern Circuit achieves summit success rates exceeding 98%.

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), meet your guide for a private transfer to your hotel in Moshi. In the afternoon or evening, attend a pre-trek briefing with your lead guide to review the itinerary, complete gear safety checks, and rent any necessary equipment.
Depart Moshi after breakfast for a 3-hour drive to Londorossi Gate for registration. Continue by vehicle to the Lemosho Trailhead (12km) and start hiking through pristine moss-draped rainforest. Spot wildlife like Colobus monkeys and blue monkeys before arriving at Mti Mkubwa Camp for dinner and rest.
Ascend out of the rainforest zone into giant heather and moorland. Climb over Shira Ridge to enter the Shira Plateau—one of the world's highest plateaus—with sweeping views of the volcanic Kibo peak. Cross the rocky ridge to Shira 1 Camp for a hot dinner and overnight stay.
Enjoy a steady, gradual trek across the Shira Plateau toward Kibo's western flank. Experience striking views of the Western Breach and dramatic glacial formations. Arrive early at Shira 2 Camp for relaxation, hot drinks, and altitude adaptation.
Ascend toward Lava Tower (4,550m) for high-elevation exposure before descending to Moir Hut Camp (4,200m). Moir Hut sits in a secluded valley at the base of Lent Hills, offering a serene environment and optional afternoon side-hikes for additional acclimatization.
Climb out of Moir Valley and follow the official Northern Circuit route across vast alpine slopes. Take a short excursion to Little Lent Hill (3,375m) before continuing along quiet ridges with wide vistas into the Kenyan plains below. Reach Buffalo (Pofu) Camp by late afternoon.
Trek eastbound across remote valleys and desert ridges along Kilimanjaro's northern face. This quiet stretch offers total solitude away from other trekking routes before arriving at Third Cave Camp for a hot lunch, relaxation, and dinner.
Ascend steadily across the Saddle area located between the volcanic cones of Kibo and Mawenzi. Arrive at School Huts base camp by early afternoon. Rest, organize summit gear, and turn in early for sleep before the midnight summit departure.
Wake at midnight for hot tea and start the steep climb up scree switchbacks between Ratzel and Rebmann glaciers to Stella Point (5,685m). Continue around the rim to reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m) at sunrise. Celebrate at Africa's highest point, then descend to Barafu Camp for a hot lunch before continuing down to Mweka Camp for the night.
Complete your final descent through green rainforest trails down to Mweka Gate. Receive your official climbing certificates (Gold for Uhuru Peak, Green for Stella Point), say goodbye to your support crew, and return by private transport to Moshi for a warm shower and celebration.
